Chemical Refining is a reliable and flexible process mainly used for challenging vegetable oils like soybean and rapeseed. It involves steps such as degumming and neutralization (often combined), bleaching, and deodorizing. For oils that contain wax, like sunflower or corn oil, an extra winterizing step can be added. During neutralization, free fatty acids (FFA) are removed as soaps using caustic soda, and the resulting soapstock is separated through centrifugation.
Physical Refining is mainly used for oils with high free fatty acid (FFA) content, such as palm, palm kernel, and coconut oils, as well as some soft oils like sunflower and corn. In this method, free fatty acids are removed during the deodorization stage through steam stripping as a distillate. The process typically includes acid treatment, optional enzymatic deep degumming, bleaching, deodorizing, and sometimes winterizing. This method usually leads to lower product losses, especially for high-FFA oils.
